Makalu Region Trek

Makalu Trekking region falls in the eastern part of Nepal. Mt. Makalu (8463m) is the fifth highest mountain in the world and is a centre of attraction for trekkers visiting this region.

Makalu Trek is a truly intrepid adventure to a remote and wild region of eastern Himalayas. Trekking in Makalu region includes the challenge of crossing three high mountain passes: Sherpani Col (6135m), West Col (6143m) and Amphu Laptsa (5850m).

You will visit Makalu Base Camp (5000m) which offers superb and spectacular views of Everest (8,850m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,463m), Chamlang (7,319m) and Baruntse (7,220m) among others.

This region is also known for being a global hotspot for ecological and cultural biodiversity.

The Makalu Trekking region lies within Makalu-Barun National Park, which is home to an amazing 3000 species of flowering plants, 440 species of birds, and 75 species of mammals, including the Snow Leopard, Red Panda, Musk Deer, Wild Boar, Wild Yak and Himalayan Thar.

The inhabitants of the Makalu Trekking region are of Tibetan ancestry and this fact is clearly evident in their attire, speech and customs. Spend time interacting with locals, exploring Buddhist culture and visiting Buddhist monasteries and chortens in the region.

Trekking in Makalu can be done for different durations depending on the entry and exit points. The approach is either from Hile or Tumlingtar, with the option to trek down to Lukla. Makalu Trek With Sherpani Col, Makalu Base Camp Trek and Makalu with 3 Passes are main trekking choices in Makalu region. Trekking in this region is best during Spring (March-May) and Autumn (Sept-Nov) seasons.

As there are very few comfortable lodges along the trekking route, camping trek is recommended to trekkers. However, a mix of tea-house and camping trek can also be organized.
