Published 1st Jan, 2023

“If you think adventures are dangerous, try routine: It’s lethal.” – Paulo Coelho

Never has a quote so perfectly summed the gist of life and travel. And to concur with Paulo Coelho, what better time to go on an adventure than the beginning of a new year! Start your year the way you deserve by exploring the authenticity of the small South Asian nation, a graceful abode in the lap of the snowcapped set of pearly-white Himalayas. The wonders of Nepal are in such harmony that the trails here sing of the melody of sheer magnificence; be it historic palaces, lavish landscapes or the majestic Himalayas, Nepal sings jingles of cultural and natural prosperity. From the melting pots of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur to isolated valleys of Tsum, Nar, and Phu, the country boasts of ravishing trekking trails. Annapurna, Everest, Langtang, Manaslu, and Dolpo among others are bestowed with routes of varying difficulty and idiosyncrasies. And then there are the Himalayas, innumerable and Herculean in might. Head to these colossal giants if you fancy being a spectator to the stupendous architect of Mother Nature herself.

Nepal is revered for trekking destinations of supreme quality and with over hundreds of trails to choose from, we have funneled down to three top trekking destinations for the occasion of New Year which can be completed by any traveling enthusiast.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek:

Short yet pure ecstasy! Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most famous treks in Nepal and rightly so culminating with the sublime panoramic views of the Annapurna range atop the Poon Hill. This trek is about 4-5 days long and fit for anyone with moderate physical condition. The trip commences at Pokhara followed by a pleasant drive to Nayapul. The trek steers towardsTikhedhunga where, en route, you will encounter beautiful landscape graced with emerald forests and magical waterfalls. The second day incorporates walk from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani, a Gurung village entertaining heritages and culture of the same ethnic group. An ascent to Poon Hill at 3193 meters of altitude then reveals the glorious Annapurna range. The trek then leads to another enchanting Gurung village of Ghandruk, finally settling in Pokhara following a drive from Dhampus. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is held in such great stature because of its fairly easy trails and Himalayas treats which come second to none.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek:

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is for those who prefer ample amount of relaxation with some intense workouts along the way; a perfect balance for a trek that can go up to an altitude of 4130 meters at the Annapurna Base Camp itself. The altitude might sound intimidating; however, the trail goes through tiny villages all along the way offering blissful hospitality and introduction to the exquisite cultural aspects. Also starting from Pokhara, the trip heads to Ghorepani following the same trails of that in the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. Relishing the ethereal beauty of the gargantuan peaks from Poon Hill, the trail heads to Ghandruk followed by Chhomrong and Deurali. A brief acquaintance with the Machhapuchhre Base Camp is succeeded by the trek to Annapurna Base Campwhich reigns supreme with views of Machhapuchhre (6997m) and numerous peaks in Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. The walk down to Dhampus follows the comforting dip in the natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda. A combination of cultural exhibition and natural splendor; the 14-days long Annapurna Base Camp Trek is remarkable, to say the least, and requires an individual of moderate condition to experience such majesty.

Khayer Lake Trek:

Yet another trek that begins from the City of Lakes, Pokhara. A drive to Nayapul is followed by inviting ascent to Ghandruk village, second largest Gurung settlement in Nepal. Here, the trails head west and lead to Chistibang. A day’s trek leads to Khopra Ridge, the gateway to Khayer Lake. Trails leading to the sacred Khayer Lake at the elevation of 4500m remain amongst the lush green forests that also shelter the locals of Gurung and Magar communities. This moderate graded Khayer Lake Trek goes on about 13 days with tea house lodging facilities and features the scenic vistas of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Khayar Khopra. On the way back to Pokhara, you also make a brief stop at Ghorepani and witness the radiant sunrise from the Poon Hill vantage point. This affair traverses the heart of the Annapurna region and is of stellar quality.
