Highlights

Overview

Rolwaling Valley is situated in the northern part of Dolakha district along Nepal-Tibet/China border. The valley lies between Rolwaling Himalayan range and Gauri Shankar Himalayan range and is part of Gauri Shankar Conservation Area.

The valley is famous for its high passes including Tashi Labtsa (5755m) and for viewing the spectacular peaks of Mt. Melungtse I (7181m), Melungtse II (7023m) and Mt. Gauri Shankar (7146m). You will also get to experience Tsho Rolpa, one of the biggest glacial lakes located at an altitude of 4580m. Much of the trekking trail is through pristine forests of oaks and rhododendrons, lakes and peaceful valleys.

The trek offers a unique cultural experience of Sherpa community who are the inhabitants of Rolwaling Valley. Temba Tshiri Sherpa, the youngest climber to summit Everest comes from Rolwaling Valley. You are likely to come across monastery & chortens, maney walls, Lama Monastery school and beautiful villages.

The best part of the trek is when crossing Tashi Labtsa pass which will require good mountaineering skills. The pass affords beautiful views of Gauri Shankar and Melungtse peaks and small trekking peaks like Mt. Pachermo (6186m). Once you cross the pass, you will drop down to Thame and head towards Namche Bazaar in Khumbu region. You can spend a day in Namche Bazaar observing Sherpa culture and hospitality before winding down to Lukla to catch a flight back to Kathmandu.

Special permit is required to trek in Rolwaling Valley. Rolwaling Valley trek is primarily a camping trek though lodges and tea houses are also available along the route. The trek is graded strenuous thus trekkers need to be physically fit.
