Overview

Tamang Heritage Trail trekking area is located about 100 kilometers north of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Trekking along this unbeaten trail will allow you to experience unique Tamang and Tibetan culture, pristine wildlife and beautiful Himalayan peaks. 
 
Tamang Heritage Trail trek takes you through authentic Tamang settlements, who shares close affinity and similar culture with Tibetans. The people here work as farmers, sheep and yak herders, as well as traders between Tibet and Rasuwa. You will love their skills in making traditional costumes, unique Tamang hats, bamboo baskets and mats.
 
There are opportunities to explore ancient monasteries, traditional architecture and lifestyles of local people. Further you will enjoy the beautiful landscapes of alpine terrain, flat meadows and rhododendron forests along the way. Langtang National Park which falls on the trail is home to such flagship species as Red Panda, Snow Leopard and Pangolin. 
 
Langtang Lirung (7245m), Dorje Lakpa (6989m), Jugal Himal, Ganesh Himal, Langtang Kerung, Paldor peak, Shringi Himal, Manaslu and Sanjen Himal ranges are clearly visible from the trekking trail. In addition there are over 70 glaciers of varying sizes and high altitude lakes such as Gosainkunda, Bhairavkunda and Dudhkunda among others.
 
Depending on whether you start from Dhunche or Syabrubesi, the trail passes through Goljung, Gatlang, Thuman, Timure and Briddim. Goljung, Gatlang, Briddim are traditional Tamang villages featuring Tamang monastery, Bon culture and the holy Chodingmo Lake. 
 
The Tamang Heritage Trail trek is graded moderate and is best approached during Autumn (Sep-Nov) and Spring (Mar-May).

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1467m)

Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi via Trishuli (Nuwakot) which takes about eight hours. You head north out of Kathmandu driving through scenic foothills and ridgeline vistas to Syabru Besi passing through Dhunche.

Stay overnight at camp.

Day 2 : Trek from Syabrubesi to Gatlang (2238m)

Trek from Syabrubesi to Gatlang via Goljung which takes about six hours. While trekking you pass through Tamang villages with Langtang peaks on the backdrop. The Tamang culture show at Goljung and Gatlang will be a memorable experience. Gatlang is set high on a hillside among terraced fields and is at a short walking distance from Tamang monastery and beautiful Choddingmo Lake.

Day 3 : Trek from Gatlang to Tatopani (2607m)

Trek from Gatlang to Tatopani takes about six hours. On the way you enjoy splendid panorama of Langtang and Ganesh Himal. Tatopani once hosted a natural hot spring which dried up after 2015 earthquake.

Day 4 : Trek from Tatopani to Thuman (2338m) via Nagthali (3165m)

Trek from Tatopani to Thuman via Nagthali takes about five hours. This trail  is impressive because of possible encounter with wild animals such as red panda, monkeys and deer. The panoramic view of Langtang, Kerung, Ganesh Himal, Sanjen ranges can be distinctly experienced from Nagthali. Nagthali is a popular meditation center for local monks and priests.

Another cultural village Thuman is popular for its Shamanic performances and add to that beautiful views of Langtang Himalayas that can be seen from every house in Thuman.

Day 5 : Trek from Thuman to Timure (1762m)

Trek from Thuman to Timure takes about five hours. The historical fort of Rasuwagadhi lies along Nepal –China (Tibet) border. Timure falls on ancient trade route between Nepal and Tibet.

Day 6 : Trek from Timure to Briddim (2229m)

Trek from Timure to Briddim takes about six hours. Today the trail is longer and is a bit rugged. Briddim is one of the most beautiful villages located on the bosom of Langtang HImal.

At Briddim you can experience rich Buddhist culture of Tamang and Tibetan. There are around 43 houses with roofs made of distinctive stone slates. You can enjoy homestay with local family. 

Day 7 : Trek from Briddim to Syabrubesi (1467m.)

Trek from Briddim to Syabrubesi takes three hours. This day the trail gently descends passing through Wangel village.

Day 8 : Drive from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu

Drive from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu takes about eight hours. It is a pleasant drive back to Kathmandu with splendid views of hills, mountains, terraces and villages. You drive along the unpaved road till Betrawati and from there follow Pasang Lhamu Highway to Kathmandu.
