Overview

Rolwaling Valley is situated in the northern part of Dolakha district along Nepal-Tibet/China border. The valley lies between Rolwaling Himalayan range and Gauri Shankar Himalayan range and is part of Gauri Shankar Conservation Area.
 
The valley is famous for its high passes including Tashi Labtsa (5755m) and for viewing the spectacular peaks of Mt. Melungtse I (7181m), Melungtse II (7023m) and Mt. Gauri Shankar (7146m). You will also get to experience Tsho Rolpa, one of the biggest glacial lakes located at an altitude of 4580m. Much of the trekking trail is through pristine forests of oaks and rhododendrons, lakes and peaceful valleys.
 
The trek offers a unique cultural experience of Sherpa community who are the inhabitants of Rolwaling Valley. Temba Tshiri Sherpa, the youngest climber to summit Everest comes from Rolwaling Valley. You are likely to come across monastery & chortens, maney walls, Lama Monastery school and beautiful villages. 
 
The best part of the trek is when crossing Tashi Labtsa pass which will require good mountaineering skills. The pass affords beautiful views of Gauri Shankar and Melungtse peaks and small trekking peaks like Mt. Pachermo (6186m). Once you cross the pass, you will drop down to Thame and head towards Namche Bazaar in Khumbu region. You can spend a day in Namche Bazaar observing Sherpa culture and hospitality before winding down to Lukla to catch a flight back to Kathmandu. 
 
Special permit is required to trek in Rolwaling Valley. Rolwaling Valley trek is primarily a camping trek though lodges and tea houses are also available along the route. The trek is graded strenuous thus trekkers need to be physically fit.  

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Drive from Kathmandu (1350m) to Dolakha (1660m) via Lamosangu (750m) and Charikot (1980m) takes about four hours.

Continuing the drive from Dolakha to Shigati (950m) via Piguti (920m) takes another three hours in total. The journey passes through gravel roads, crossing various villages of mixed communities. You will encounter several streams and traverse jungles adorned with a variety of orchids, rhododendrons, and other natural vegetation.

Day 2 : Trek from Shigati to Jagat (1440m.) takes about six hours.

Trek from Shigati to Jagat (1440m.) takes about six hours. You trek through normal flat land along the side of the river. You pass through rice terraced. There are small villages on your way which are inhabited by mixed community. Several times, you cross the jungles covered by orchid, few rhododendron trees and wild vegetation. Now you cross a suspension bridge to reach Jagat, a small town resided by people of mixed culture.

Day 3 : Trek from Jagat to Simigaon (2020m.) takes about six hours.

The first part of your trails follows normally flat path, then it passes through the jungle.  At several places you cross through suspension bridges. There are numerous villages on your way. You can find small teashops and local shops at some of the places. You steeply climb up to Simigaon, a village inhabited by Buddhist and few Hindus.

Day 4 : Trek from Simigaon to Daldung La (3976m.) takes about seven hours.

After the uphill trek you will now come across paths through which you will enjoy the scenic beauty of the place.

Day 5 : Trek from Daldung La to Beding (3690m.) takes about seven and half hours.

Trek from Daldung La to Beding (3690m.) takes about seven and half hours.  The trek now ascends uphill through different varieties of plants and Rhododendron trees. You trek over the suspension bridges over the deep gorges in few places making the trek even more enchanting. You finally reach Beding which is a big Sherpa village.

Day 6 : Trek from Beding to Na (4180m.) takes about four hours.

Trek from Beding to Na (4180m.) takes about four hours. This day you can explore the upper slopes of the valley for Snow Partridge or a visit to the nearby glacier lake. The trek path slightly ascends along the river bank. The place is an open path with fresh air and the charming sound of the river. You can have the panoramic view of the mountains as the trek moves forward. You will also come across the Sherpa village having their own specialties.

Day 7 : Rest Day at Na.

Rest Day at Na. You will be able to witness the various views of mountains like Gauri Shanker, Menlung, Yalung and the mountains of the Tibet. You will be on a Yalung Glacier camp today.

Day 8 : Trek from Na to Tso Rolpa Lake (4540m.) takes about four hours.

Trek from Na to Tso Rolpa Lake (4540m.) takes about four hours. You will be trekking through the flat and gradually up path. You will be able to witness the beautiful Natural Lake filled with the chilling water of the glaciers. The views of Menlung and Tibetan Side Mountains add glory to your trek.

Day 10 : Trek from Trakarding Glacier to Tashi Lapcha Phedi Camp (5755m.) takes about five hours.

Day 11 : Climb from Tashi Lapcha Phedi Camp to Tashi Lapcha Pass (5755m.) to Tashi Cape takes about four hours.

Climb from Tashi Lapcha Phedi Camp to Tashi Lapcha Pass (5755m.) to Tashi Cape takes about four hours. You will climb up the Tashi Lapcha Phedi and cross the Tashi Lapcha Pass through Tashi Cape. You trek through snow covered route.

Day 13 : Trek Thyomgbo to Thame (3820m.) takes about 3 hours.

Trek Thyomgbo to Thame (3820m.) takes about 3 hours. Early morning you will trek down to Thame. This trail gradually descends and you trek an easier trail and will be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the environment. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 14 : Trek from Thame to Namche Bazaar (3440m.) takes about 4 hours.

Trek from Thame to Namche Bazaar (3440m.) takes about 4 hours. The trail descends gently for early one hour to Sanasa (3550m.). Now you can catch a glimpse of the majestic peaks of the Khumbu including Mt Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru. Passing by several villages and numerous teashops, the trail descends steeply to a bridge over the river Dudh Koshi at Phunki Tenga (3250mThe way from Sanasa to Namche is uneven with views of forests, scenery and mountains.

Day 15 : Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2886 m.) takes about six hours.

Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2886 m.) takes about six hours. The last day of your trek leads from Namche Bazaar via Monjo to Lukla. The trek is pleasant, except for few short uphill climbs and then down to the Bhote- Koshi River crossing it three times. Day 16 : Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu.
