Overview

The Lower Dolpo Trek highlights include visiting Shey Phoksundo National Park and Shey Phoksundo Lake (3660m). Shey Phoksundo National Park is the largest and only trans-Himalayan National Park in Nepal.

The Dolpo trek involves crossing two high passes Numala Pass (5115m) and Bagala Pass (5100m). Both of these passes look out to a splendid panorama of Himalayas in the North including Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. 

Surrounded by Tibet in North and highest Dhaulgari Massif in South, the Dolpo region is the natural embodiment of high passes, rare flora and fauna and sweeping Himalayan vistas. The medicinal plant, Yarchagumba (Coerdiopsis sinensis) a type of wild mushroom is found in abundance in this region, oft recongnized for its benefits of improving health and fitness.

The trek is best during September to November & March to May.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival at Kathmandu International Airport

On your arrival at Kathmandu International Airport, you will be greeted with flower garlands/Khadas. Our representative will then take you to your hotel. If time prevails, you will visit office for paperwork. Stay overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 2 : Trip preparation and city tour of Kathmandu or Patan and Bhaktapur.

Today, you will visit popular world heritage monuments in Kathmandu including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath, Swoyambhunath, and Pashupatinath. Alternatively, you can also choose Bhakatapur and Patan sightseeing.  By late afternoon, you will drive back to your hotel. Stay overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 3 : Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj.

Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Our representative will take you to the airport for a flight to Nepalgunj. In Nepalgunj you will be taken to your hotel. Stay overnight at hotel in Nepalgunj.

Day 4 : Fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal (2475 m.) and trek from Juphal to Dunai (2140 m.) takes about 4 hours.

Fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal (2475 m.) and trek from Juphal to Dunai (2140 m.) takes about 4 hours. Catch a morning flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. From Juphal you start trekking to Dunai, which is the headquater of Dolpo, a remote district of Nepal. You will walk through farms and villages along Bheri River. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 5 : Trek from Dunai to Shyanta (2478 m.) takes about six hours.

Trek from Dunai to Shyanta (2478 m.) takes about six hours. You will walk along the forest of pine and rhododendros. Cross a suspension bridge and climb towards Thulo Bheri enjoying views of Kagmara Peak. Further you will enter into a forest before reaching Syanta. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 6 : Trek from Shyants to Somdu (3038 m.) takes about seven hours.

Trek from Shyants to Somdu (3038 m.) takes about seven hours. This day, you will follow the banks of Suligar River. The trails is a mix of  forests of pine, fir and birch and hills You will pass up the villages of Kageni, Raktang and Jyalhasa. The cliffs here are of unique geographical features. Further up you will come across Tibetan settlements with shops. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 7 : Trek from Somdu to Phoksundo (3600m.) takes about five hours.

Trek from Somdu to Phoksundo (3600m.) takes about five hours. En route, you will pass a picturesque waterfall. Along the trekking route, you will cross some mind blowing pasturelands. You will follow the path along Phoksundo and Pungmo Khola to reach Phoksundo Lake at an altitude of 3,600m. The lake is  waylaid by 300m high waterfall and Ringmo village full of chortens and Mani walls.Stay overnight at camp.

Day 8 : Rest day at Phoksundo to explore the Phuksundo Lake.

Rest day at Phoksundo to explore the Phuksundo Lake. It is the deepest lake of Nepal listed in Ramsar sites. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 9 : Trek from Phoksundo Lake to Baga La phedi

Trek from Phoksundo Lake to Baga La phedi. You retrace your route as far as Ringmo and then follow trail eastwards through forests of juniper and blue pine. The trail follows the river up the valley to a waterfall and you will camp here at the base of the Baga La. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 10 : Cross Baga La (5090m) and trek to Numa La phedi (4800m).

Cross Baga La (5090m) and trek to Numa La phedi (4800m). From your camp it's a steady 3 hour climb to the top of the Baga La, the second of the high passes. The descent is gradual at first but it soon drops steeply to a stream before ascending again to the foot of the Numa La. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 11 : Cross Numa La (5360m) and trek to Dho Tarap (3944m).

Cross Numa La (5360m) and trek to Dho Tarap (3944m). You continue climbing through arid country to the last of the high passes, the Numa La. It is marked by mani stones and, if it is clear, you can see as far as Dhaulagiri. The trail now descends past a huge mani wall to the Tarap region and you walk through the barley fields of the Tarap Valley to the settlement of Dho. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 12 : Rest day at Dho Tarap

Rest day at Dho Tarap, Dho which is the largest settlement in Tarap and has several gompas. Dho Tarap has a human settlement that exists at the highest altitude of the world. On the ridge above the village is the Ri Bhunpa Gompa and, just to the east, the village of Shipchhok has a Bon-po gompa which is certainly worth exploring. There are also opportunities to get great views of the valley and surrounding snow peaks from a number of nearby ridges. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 13 : Trek from Dho to Lahini (3475m).

Trek from Dho to Lahini (3475m). This morning's walk is almost level and follows the river until it flows into a gorge. You enter the gorge which has large rose shrubs and other wildflowers, and after crossing and re-crossing the river numerous times you finally come to a flat expanse where you can camp. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 14 : Trek from Lahini to Tarakot (2600m).

Trek from Lahini to Tarakot (2600m). The trail today is steep, narrow and dangerous as it clings to the cliffs, and the bridges along here can often be washed out. Eventually, the valley widens and the route becomes easier as you approach the village of Khanigaon. You then climb high above the river before descending towards the Barbung Khola and the fortress village of Tarakot. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 15 : Trek from Tarakot to Dunai (2100m).

Trek from Tarakot to Dunai (2100m). You follow the Barbung Khola downstream along the south bank to the village of Lawan, before crossing to the north bank and walking for several more hours to Dunai. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 16 : Trek from Dunai to Juphal (2475 m.) takes about three hours.

Trek from Dunai to Juphal (2475 m.) takes about three hours. Stay overnight at camp. From Dunai you will enjoy a pleasant walk to Juphal following the Bheri River all along. Stay overnight at camp.

Day 17 : Fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj and same day fly from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu.

Fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj and same day fly from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu. Early morning you will reach Juphal airport for a flight to Nepalgunj and from there to Kathmandu. Once in Kathmandu you will be transferred to hotel. Stay overnight at hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 18 : Departure

As per your flight schedule, our airport representative will transfer from your hotel to the airport for your final departure.
