Highlights

Overview

In Tibetan dialect, Lhotse means the ‘South Peak’. Lhotse stands prominently side by side with Mt. Everest separated only by a small section of South Col. The Lhotse main is 8516m. in height and is recognized as the fourth highest mountain on earth. There are other subsidiaries of Lhotse including Lhotse Middle (8414m.) and Lhotse Shar (8383m.). All of the Lhotse peaks have been climbed.

The Swiss expedition team of led by Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger successfully climbed Lhotse in the spring of 1956. Austrians Sepp Mayerl and Rolf Walter became the first to climb Lhotse Shar in 1970 and recently in 2001, Eugeny Vinogradsky, Sergei Timofeev, Alexei Bolotov and Petr Kuznetsov from Russia summitted Lhotse Middle.

The standard route of climbing Lhotse is the same as Everest till Camp III or Yellow Band to be exact, from where one has to turn right of the Geneva Spur towards Lhotse face. The pitfalls of climbing Lhotse in the past involved unexpected strong winds and cold temperatures, the formidable Lhotse face wall, sharp icy and rocky climbs and a need for great coordination and foot rhythm.
