Highlights

Overview

Karnali River is the longest river in Nepal with numerous tributaries. The river has its source in the Himalayas and traverses through hills, valleys, forests and into the plains of Southern Nepal. It provides lifeline for millions of residents of Nepal and India and is the most integral geographical feature of karnali province and Far West province.

Karnali is by far one of the best rivers for rafting and kayaking. The river is known for big volume rafting and kayaking trips. It combines white water rafting with wildlife and village experience.

Karnali River is known for its big volume, low flows, wild rapids, challenging holes building to its climax in lower canyons. In terms of volume, the river is comparable to the Sun Kosi, but the Karnali is more constrained by its canyon walls, giving bigger, more continuous and serious rapids. This constrained nature of the river means that any increase in volume has more pronounced effect on the difficulty of the rapids. At 21,700 cusecs at Chisapani, Karnali River sets a record of the highest extreme instantaneous discharge.
