Overview

Gokyo Chola Pass trek gives you the grand tour of the famous Khumbu valley. This is a strenuous trek leading to Gokyo Lake and over the Cho La at 5,430m. making a circuit of Tawache (6,367m.) and Cholatse (6,440m).
 
Emerging into the Khumbu valley above Lobuje, the trail continues up to Kalapatthar and then back to Lukla via Tengboche and Namche Bazaar. The small herding settlement of Gokyo (4750m.) lies on the banks of the third lake in a series of small turquoise mountain lakes. From the ridge above Gokyo, you can see the four peaks above 8000m, namely Cho You, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. In addition to this you can also see the amazing ice ridge between Cho You and Gyachung (7922m), considered one of the most dramatic panoramas in the Khumbu region. There are many options for additional exploration and high-altitude walking, including the crossing of Cho La, a 5420m-high pass into Khumbu and a hike to Gokyo Ri.
 
Breathtaking mountain vistas are complemented by visits to Sherpa villages, homes and monasteries offering you an insight into the quiet but culturally vibrant Sherpa way of life.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2886m), which takes about 35 minutes.

After an early-morning breakfast, our guide will pick you up from the hotel and drive you to the domestic airport terminal. You'll receive your boarding pass and fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2886m), which takes about 35 minutes. The flight offers close views of the Himalayas and picturesque landscapes of hills, farms, and rivers.

Upon arrival in Lukla, you'll begin a 3-hour trek to Phakding (2640m). Starting from Lukla, you'll gently climb up the mountainside on the left bank of the Dudh Koshi River. Mt. Nupla (5885m), visible in the distance, stands atop the Kongde Ridge. Descending a mountainside path, you'll merge into the route to Everest, enjoying views of a wonderful valley to your right and Mt. Kusum Kang (6367m) to the far end. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 3 : Rest at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization.

Day 6 : Rest day at Dingboche (4260 m.) for acclimatization.

There are some breathtaking views of the North face of Ama Dablam and the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge as you explore this beautiful valley that leads up to Island Peak. The walk is short with a good chance to relax in the afternoon. You have another option as you can hike up to Chhukum. From here you can enjoy the panoramic view of Island peak, Ama Dablam, Makalu, Tawoche peak and others. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 7 : Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4930m) takes about five and a half hours.

The trail follows a downward path to Pheriche village. Today's walk offers views of Mt. Tawache, Ama Dablam, and to the north, Pokalde (5741m), Kongma-tse (5820m), and the great wall of Nuptse. After two hours of walking, the trail from Pheriche joins near Dugla (4595m) before a small wooden bridge over the river of the Khumbu glacier. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 8 : Trek from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp (5486m.) via Gorakshep (5180m.) and back to Gorakshep for an overnight stay, taking about seven hours.

Day 9 : Trek from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar (5545m.) and then to Dzongla (4620m.) taking about six hours.

Descend gently from Gorakshep to Lobuche and then follow a narrow path stretching along the riverbed before ascending to Dzongla. Day 10 : Trek from Dzongla to Thagna (4650m.) taking about five and a half hours.

As you reach Chola glacier, the path steeply ascends, followed by a walk along icy trails. After crossing Chola pass, descend through a stony path until reaching Phedi. Continue up and down until reaching Thagna, a small village with few lodges and tea shops, offering views of Machermo peak and others. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 11 : Trek from Thagna to Gokyo (4750m.) which takes about four hours.

Day 12 : Rest day at Gokyo with an excursion in and around Gokyo valley.

Rest day at Gokyo with an excursion in and around Gokyo valley. Explore the trade center of Gokyo, situated by the side of Ngozumpa glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal. Make a side trip to the Fifth Lake via Fourth Lake. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 13 : Trek/climb from Gokyo to Gokyo Ri (5483m) and then trek back to Machermo (4150m.) via Gokyo village takes about four and half hours.

Gokyo Ri looms above the village on the northern edge of the lake and you leave camp just after first light, following a steep path up the hillside. As you climb, the summits of Everest, Lhotse and Makalu slowly come into sight and the view from the summit of Gokyo Ri itself, is one of the finest to be had in the Everest region - some say it is even better than that from Kala Patthar. After lunch it is a short walk to the village of Machermo. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 14 : Trek from Machermo (4150m) to Namche Bazaar (3440m) takes about five hours.

The trail gently descends to Dole and then starts descending steeply to Phortse Tenga (3650m), passing through rhododendron forests. Afterward, the path ascends steeply to Mongla Danda (4000m) and gently descends to Kyanjoma (3500m), following a trail with small ups and downs to your next destination. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 15 : Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2886 m.) takes about six hours.

Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2886 m.) takes about six hours. The last day of your trek leads from Namche Bazaar via Monjo to Lukla. The trek is pleasant, except for a few short uphill climbs and then stepping down to the Bhote-Koshi River crossing it three times. The last uphill climb of 45 minutes will bring you to Lukla for your overnight stay. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 16 : Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu takes approximately 35 minutes.

Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu takes approximately 35 minutes. Lukla - Kathmandu flights are only operated during the morning hours, usually from 6 AM till 11AM. Fierce wind blows across the mountains in the late afternoon and evening making it impossible for planes to operate. You will enjoy this scenic plane ride one more time before getting back to Kathmandu.
