Overview

Ama Dablam Base Camp trek sets off with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, from where your actual trekking begins.

In Sherpa language, ‘Dablam’ means a piece of traditional necklace worn by Sherpa women around their neck. Hence ‘Ama Dablam’ stands for ‘mother’s necklace’. Ama Dablam is perhaps the most beautiful mountain to look at. Standing at 6812m, Ama Dablam is one of the most popular peaks to climb and is regarded as the Matterhorn of the Himalayas.

During Ama Dablam Base Camp trek, You will walk along the Bhote Koshi river up to Namche, the capital of Sherpa community. Here you will be able to experience the Sherpa culture and try local cuisine. Further you will visit Tyangboche Monastery, one of the biggest and oldest monasteries in the Himalayas. The Monastery will offer you the first and the best views of the Ama Dablam peak. Along the way you will have ample opportunity to explore Himalayan wildlife and pristine biodiversity.

Your final stop will be Dingboche and Mingbo from whence it is just a day hiking trip to Ama Dablam base camp. The base camp offers spectacular up-close views of Ama Dablam peak and other world’s highest peaks including Mount Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Kangtega. The highest point of the trek is Ama Dablam Base Camp 4600m.

Since the trek falls within Everest National Park, the area has been well preserved for its unique biodiversity. Your trekking path occasionally crosses the trails used by wild animals such as Yaks, Himalayan Thar, Snow Leopard and Red panda. Enjoy your walk through the forests of oak, juniper and rhododendrons.

The Ama Dablam Base Camp trek is less crowded in terms of trekkers than Everest Base Camp Trek. This is a complete tea-house trekking led by our very capable guides. Autumn (Sep-Nov) and Spring (Mar-May) are the two best seasons for Aba Dablam Base Camp trek.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2886m.) that takes about 35 minutes.

After early-morning breakfast, our guide will pick you up from the hotel and drive to the domestic airport terminal. Receive your boarding pass and fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2886m.) that takes about 35 minutes. The flight offers you up close views of the Himalayas and romantic landscapes of hills, farms and rivers.

On arrival to Lukla, you will begin 3 hours trek to Phakding (2640 m.). You start your trek from Lukla with a gentle climb up the mountainside on the left bank of the Dudh Koshi River. Mt. Nupla (5885m) which can be seen in the distance is a peak atop the Kongde Ridge. You descend a mountainside path that merges into your route to Everest, with views to a wonderful valley to your right; and Mt. Kusum Kang (6367m.) to the far end. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 2 : Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m.)

Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m.) takes approximately five hours. Namche Bazaar (3440m) is surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges and opens out only where it faces the Bhote Koshi. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 3 : A day for rest at Namche Bazaar (3440m.) for acclimatization.

A day for rest at Namche Bazaar (3440m.) for acclimatization. It is an ideal place to spend a rest day for acclimatization to the high altitude before heading off towards Tyangboche. For acclimatization you walk up to Khumjung where you can visit a monastery. You can also enjoy the splendid views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse, Tawoche, and Kwangde and so on. Or you can take an hour's walk up to Syangboche (3800m.) where Everest View Hotel is situated above Namche for an outstanding view of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 4 : Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tyangboche (3867m.) takes about five hours.

You continue climbing the mountainside diagonally until you come to the stone gate built by lamas which marks your entry into Tyangboche (3860m). Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 5 : Trek from Tyangboche to Cholungche takes approximately four hours.

Day 6 : Trek from Cholungche to Ama Dablam Base Camp (4572 m.).

You choose a backcountry route away from the tourist trail, traveling through tiny yak herder settlements and over countless moraines as you circle around the base of Ama Dablam. Base camp sits in a beautiful grassy area at 14,500 feet. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 8 : Trek from Tyangboche to Namche Bazaar (3440 m) takes about four and half hours.

Trek from Tyangboche to Namche Bazaar (3440 m) takes about four and half hours. The walk from Tyangboche is mostly downhill on the main busy trail with a few steep climbs for an hour from the bridge at Phungitenga, near to Shanasha. The walk to Namche is very scenic on a long winding path. En route you will visit traditional villages of Khumjung and Khunde. From Khumjung village another 30 minutes walk brings you to the village of Khunde. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 9 : Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2886 m.) takes about six hours.

Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2886 m.) takes about six hours. The last day of your trek leads from Namche Bazaar via Monjo to Lukla. The trek is pleasant, except for a few short uphill climbs and then down to the Bhote-Koshi River crossing it three times. The last uphill climb of 45 minutes will bring you to Lukla for your overnight stay. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 10 : Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu takes 35 minutes.
