With a target to bring in 20 million tourists by 2020, Nepal launched a national campaign 'Visit Nepal Year 2020' on 29 May 2018. The official logo of Visit Nepal Year 2020 was recently unveiled by the Tourism Ministry.
The main organizing committee of VNY 2020 is chaired by Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) Mr Rabindra Adhikari. The Ministry has established a Secretariat to make necessary preparations to drive the vision forward. As part of the campaign, the Tourism Ministry unveiled 60-day action plan that focuses on immediate construction and expansion of the international and domestic airports, rebuilding of heritage sites and construction of Gautam Buddha Airport in Bhairahawa to be completed before 2020. The ministry will also initiate process to bring strategic partner for Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) while taking forward NAC’s proposal to purchase two more narrow-body aircraft.
A Think-tank group has also been formed involving tourism experts, tourism entrepreneurs, media personalities and executive members of major tourism agencies such as Nepal Tourism Board, Department of Tourism, Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal, Hotel Association of Nepal, Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents, Nepal Association of Rafting Agents etc., in order to provide recommendations and inputs to the government for the overall development and promotion of tourism.
In coordination with Main Organizing Committee, the tourism ministry is currently working in formulating country-wise tourism promotion strategy to help tourism promotion organizations to carry out promotional activities at national and international level. International tourism promotional programs, activities and festivals will be organized in the country as well as in potential tourism markets.
Other campaign strategies include developing tourism satellite sites, promote new tourism products, create infrastructures such as roads, airports, trails and facilities, attract domestic and foreign investment in tourism sector, improve service standards, and provide skill development and capacity building training for marginalized communities.
Mr. Nava Raj Dahal, President of Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal and Managing Director of Nepal Environmental Treks & Expedition, is a member of Main Organizing Committee for VNY 2020. Mr. Nava Raj Dahal is also the member of Think-tank group.
The campaign if successful is expected to further boost the overall economy of Nepal thereby improving livelihoods and spreading benefits of tourism to all.
