Mrs. Bidhya Devi Bhandari, Vice Chairperson of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), has been elected as the first female president of federal democratic republic of Nepal on 29 October. Rt. Honorable Bhandari has made a history to become the first woman to grace the title of head of state in a country that still practices patriarchal values.
Rt. Honorable Bhandari is the second President of federal democratic republic of Nepal. Bhandari received 327 votes in the presidential election which was participated by 597 members in the 601-member Parliament. Rt. Honorable Bhandari has previously held the post of Defence Minister.
Similarly Mrs. Onsari Gharti Magar, member of UCPN (Maoist) party, made a history by becoming elected as first female speaker House of Speaker of federal democratic republic of Nepal. She was elected as the House of Speaker unopposed by the parliament on October 16, 2015.
