Highlights

Overview

Mt. Kailash or Mt. Khangri Rimpoche is a spiritual pilgrimage and venerated shrine for four major religions of Asia: Bons, Tibetan Buddhism, Hindus and Jains.

In Tibetan language Khangri Rimpoche means ‘Precious Jewel of Snow’. The mountain is the source of water for four great rivers of Asia: the Indus, the Yarlung Tsangpo, Karnali, Indus and the Sutlej. Tibetans believe that it is the residence of Demchog, a fierce looking tantric deity who lives there with his consort, Dorje Phagmo. The great saint and poet Milarepa is said to have spent several years here meditating in a cave. The followers of ancient Bon Pa religion take Kailash to be the soul of Tibet. Mount Kailash is Mount Ashtapada for Jains as they believe their Saint Rishabanatha achieved spiritual liberation. For the Hindus, Mount Kailash is the earthly manifestation of Mt. Meru and abode of Lord Shiva and Parbati. As for the Jains, Kailash is the site where their first prophet, Rishabh achieved enlightenment.

Along with Mt. Kailash, you will also visit the sacred lake of Mapam Yumtso or Mansarovar. It is here that Buddhists believe mother of Buddha bathe before giving birth to Buddha. It is also revered by Hindus who consider dipping in the lake to expunge all mortal sins and pave the way towards heaven.

Our Kailash and Mansarovar tour begins with from Kerung, a town lying in the Nepal-Tibet border. It takes seven hours to reach Kerung from Kathmandu following which you will cross Nepal-China Friendship bridge to Tibet. The route passes through Saga and Darchen to reach Mapam Yumtso Lake or Mansarovar Lake where you will have time to explore its natural beauty. From her you will advance towards Tarboche, the beginning point of Kailash circumambulation.

You will return to Nepal the same way back.
