Nepal is undoubtedly one of the richest countries in biodiversity. There have been as many as 867 bird species recorded in Nepal. This represents about 8% of the total bird species in the world. Almost 70 species are considered to be threatened in Nepal. Nepal has two types of bird species: resident and migratory. Birds often migrate to Nepal to escape the winter and for breeding from as far as Siberia and China, making a remarkable journey of thousands of miles over the Himalayas.

 

Bird watching in Nepal is available throughout the year. Autumn and Spring, though, are considered to be the best time of the year. This is a time when varieties of flowers bloom forth and rolling hills are covered in greenery. Specifically, national parks, wildlife reserves and conservation areas are considered to be the best places to spots verities of bird species in Nepal. 

 

Chitwan National Park has the highest number of bird species ever recorded in Nepal, where as many as 525 species have been discovered. Similarly Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve has recorded 441 species out of which 87 are winter and trans-Himalayan migratory bird species. Annapurna Conservation Area has around 474 species of resident bird. 

 

Himalayan and Blood Pheasants, Daphne, Munal, Duck, Ibis, Snow Chock, White tailed Stonechat, White-breasted Kingfisher, Large racquet-tailed Drongo, Bengal Florican, Eagles, Striated Marsh Warbler, Red-billed and Yellow-billed Chough, Swam Partridge, Golden-backed Woodpecker, Bulbul, Cuckoo, Coots, Mallard, Common teal, Gulls are some of the common birds of Nepal.
