Overview

Dhaulagiri I has been termed as the ‘White Mountain’ because of its colossal mass of snow that dazzles any one at first sight. Dhaulagiri I is 8167m. tall and is earth’s 7th highest mountain. Attempts were made to climb the peak since the 1950s, most notably by the French expedition team of Maurice Herzog. However, it wasn’t until 1960 that the mountain was first summitted by a Swiss-Austrian expedition team led by Max Eiselin, Kurt Diemberger, P. Diener, E. Forrer, A. Schelbert, Nyima Dorje Sherpa and Nawang Dorje Sherpa.  The climb followed a circuitous route around the mountain from Tukuche, over Dhampus pass and French Col to approach the summit from the North – East Col. Many expeditions after them have followed original the northeast ridge route though the mountain can be approached from most directions.

Mt. Dhaulagiri presents an extraordinary piece of climbing, a very demanding and daunting challenge. The views from the top affords a fantastic view of adjacent Dhaulgairi peaks, Annapurna, Macchapuchre, Manaslu and the Kali Gandaki valley including the deepest gorge in the world.

Dhaulagiri along with Annapurna forms Kaligandaki gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. The Dhaulagiri Massif also boasts of one of the longest sections of the Himalayas.
